Our Classes

Our curriculum is crafted to support a diverse array of students and their unique experiences. Those seeking a personalized approach can choose one-on-one instruction tailored to their specific needs and pace. While some students excel in a one-on-one format, others excel in a group setting. We invite students to discuss their preferences with us, as they can easily transition between class sizes and teaching styles. Furthermore, classes can consist of colleagues, friends, or even family members.

Parents, if your child is struggling with Spanish in school, we can act as their tutors.  We will provide an enormous advantage for your child. In a competitive school setting.

General Spanish
Classes

Our General Spanish classes are available as individual one-on-one teaching, and in two sizes of group classes. See PRICE LIST. Beginner level students can expect to finish the course with basic telephone Spanish and email skills

Group class students should have the same goal and similar skill level. They should also be able to meet at the same time, online or in person. Class members should be booked at the same time. We urge that you do not book for classes with more than 8 students.

Medical Spanish

One of our most popular programs is designed for medical professionals. In several English language countries there are large Hispanic populations, and the Spanish speakers need medical care like everyone else.  This curriculum will work with doctors, nurses, and physician assistants.

After successfully completing this class, a student can expect to largely avoid having to use a translator to communicate with patients.  You will learn the Spanish words for body parts, common ailments, and the words and sentence structures required to examine and interview a patient and communicate diagnoses and suggested care.

Spanish for Work

Spanish For Work

In Spanish for work classes, in addition to the general Spanish material we will cover common business environment situations.  You will be able to organize meetings, instruct co-workers, use quality business-speak over the phone and the like.

No matter what level at which you begin your instruction, you will soon be dealing with business introductions comfortably before moving onto other matters.

We hope to broaden the instruction to make you comfortable with how business is done and communications effected in Hispanic cultures.  After the more advanced instruction, a student will have sufficient fluency to work in a Spanish speaking country.

Spanish For Travel

In these classes, we start with the Generalized Spanish and include words and phrases commonly used in travel situations.  After completing this course, a student will be able to obtain directions for common destinations, register at a hotel, buy transportation tickets, order meals, seek travel advice on where to visit and so forth.

The specialized vocabulary will be helpful not just while traveling.  These words and phrases are part of everyday life

With An Instructor

This specialized travel may be one of the best ways to rapidly gain fluency, albeit the most time-consuming and expensive.
In general, a student will decide he or she wants to visit a particular city or country, and the instructor accompanies the student.

Instead of acting as a mere translator, the instructor will use every interaction and experience as a teaching opportunity. All words in Spanish used will be explained.  A trip to a store will have the instructor teaching the words for the merchandise.  Meals out will be a methodology to teach the food items and their preparation from the menu.

Price List

Our classes are priced by class size, not by specialty or curriculum. (Travel with an instructor is priced separately.) Students should choose the learning format that suits them bestsome prefer one-on-one instruction, while others enjoy group learning.

While courses may focus on medical or business use, much of the Spanish overlaps across contexts.

All prices listed are for one hour of instruction.

About me

Stephanie Arroyave Gil

Stephanie is a well-known, highly regarded Spanish language instructor for English speakers.  A Colombian native, Stephanie began giving foreigners private Spanish lessons in 2015 while completing a bachelor’s degree in English-Spanish at the Pontificia Bolivariana University. Previously, Stephanie worked as a tv and radio producer, as a production assistant at the Cosmovisión chanal, and on the movie En Coma.

Stephanie is passionate about her Colombian culture and Spanish heritage, and teaching.  She also enjoys writing, reading and community service. In 2017, she joined a CSR initiative at Prensa Escuela, a program of the newspaper El Colombiano. She also loves learning languages and besides English, she has studied basic German, as well as Latin and Greek as part of a language and culture study group at her university.

From 2018 to 2019, Stephanie worked as a Spanish and English teacher in public and private schools, Padre Manyanet and Carlos Vieco Ortiz. During this time, she also obtained a diploma in teaching Spanish as a foreign language at her alma mater. She was grateful for being able to combine two jobs she loved: teaching Spanish at Toucan Spanish School to students from all over the world, while spending her weekends as a Spanish and English teacher at Commune 13 where she supported the studies of the community’s young residents.

Since 2019, she has taught Spanish as a foreign language as a private tutor, as well as in different schools, including Toucan Spanish School, Valley Spanish School, and Spanish with Carla. Over the years, she has gained tremendous experience in online and face-to-face teaching.

Testimonials

Finding Stephanie has given me the opportunity to correct an error in my schooling. I have long wanted to be bi-lingual, and Stephanie has made that possible. I commend her with no reservation.

Jesse M.

New Jersey – US

I am a 4th year high school student in a small rural city. I managed to miss the chance to study language, as choices are more limited than in big city schools. I want to go to Barcelona to do the nightlife scene, enjoy the food, and see Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, and with Stephanie’s help I will travel there this summer - and I will not worry about communication.

Catherine T.

Des Moines – US

I am at the beginning stage of a small group class for novices, and it is going very well. I believe I will be able to go to Argentina, a long-held goal, and be able to communicate, before Easter.

Bob L.

New York City – US

I live in Miami, which is the capital of South America. So many cultural activities and fun things are done in the Latin community, and I am studying so I can participate fully. Stephanie and her instructor colleagues are great teachers.

Mary W.

Miami – US

I am a care-giver, and although I was never a good student, Stephanie was patient with me and the rest of our small class. There are many Spanish speaking families in my area, so when my agency found out I was learning Spanish I got a raise. I am very grateful and wish I had teachers like Stephanie when I was in school.

Wanda D.

Chicago – US

I took the introductory, general course from Stephanie and loved every moment. She is a wonderful instructor, and a lovely person. I am planning to visit Medellin so I can have some in-person classes, but I am already well along on the fluency goal.

Jane A.

Atlanta – US

I work at an investment firm in Silicon Valley. No one on staff spoke Spanish, but not all entrepreneurs speak English. I am happy with my progression under the excellent guidance of Stephanie.

Jonathan G.

San Jose – US

I am a nurse in a busy medical practice. We have a number of Hispanic patients, so I took the medical Spanish class. The instructor Stephanie obtained for me was Jose, a nurse himself, and he was amazingly helpful.

Susie G.

Los Angeles – US

Six months ago I could not have written this in Spanish.  Stephanie es una excelente profesora. Ahora puedo hablar español y viajaré a Colombia para conocerla y estudiar con ella en persona durante unos días. Aprender español con Stephanie es mucho mejor que en el instituto.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are differing time zones handled?

Generally, we work on Colombian time, which is the same as eastern time in the US. We have accommodated students from the UK, but with Australian students it is more difficult.

Will there be homework?

Sometimes homework is assigned, but you are not being graded or earning credits to graduate. Outside reading is encouraged, and appropriate reading lists will be provided.

What happens if I want to book a class when Stephanie is unavailable?

When booking on the calendar, you might consider back-up, alternate dates. Alternatively, Stephanie can assign a staff member, often one especially suited to your needs. She has access to some of the best Spanish instructors from her many years teaching in private and public schools, and working with her former fellow students at university.

Is it difficult to learn Spanish?

For English speakers, Spanish is considered a relatively easy language to learn since it shares many similarities in vocabulary. However, some learners experience difficulties with certain aspects of Spanish, such as verb conjugation, gender changing and pronunciation. With dedication and consistent practice, it is possible to overcome these challenges and achieve fluency.

Can I book a group of classes in advance?

Yes. A purchase of a block of 5 or more classes will result in a 10% discount.

Do I have to buy books or other learning materials?

As needed, special worksheets long used by Stephanie will be disseminated electronically; the costs are covered by your tuition.

Are individual, in person classes available?

If a student lives in or near Medellin, Colombia, in-person classes can be arranged. Personalized travel is available depending on the date and destination, but the student must cover all travel costs of the instructor.

Why should I learn Spanish?

In addition to what is set forth above in class descriptions, benefits include improved communication with Spanish-speaking individuals, much improved cultural understanding, and increased career opportunities. Spanish is also one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, making it a valuable skill for personal and professional growth. Additionally, learning a new language can improve cognitive function and provide a sense of personal fulfillment.
